Physical Education and School Sport Qualifications

Plymouth and Cornwall Training are delighted to support the facilitation of PE & School Sport Qualifications. We are delighted to be able to offer Apprenticeships that specialise in curriculum Physical Education and wider school sport - please click on the 'apprenticeships' tab above for further details.

Schools interested in supporting the development and infrastructure of their PE and School Sports provision should express their interest via the below email address. Current specialist qualification routes offered include:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport
  • Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport
  • Level 5 Primary School Physical Education Specialism
  • Level 6 Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership

Through the Level 2 and 3 apprenticeship initiative listed above, Primary Schools can utilise their Sports Premium funding in supporting PE teaching staff, through the provision of sport-specific coaches to assist in the delivery of lessons, breakfast clubs, lunchtimes and after school. The intended benefits to a school in supporting an opportunity such as this includes having an individual who can facilitate/support PE lessons, a potential classroom teaching assistant (to reduce costs in hiring agency staff), and support in administration tasks etc.

It is also worth noting that the Association for Physical Education (afPE) believes that "coaches employed in or by schools supporting curriculum time PE should be qualified to a Level 2 National Governing Body (NGB) Award and be working towards a Level 2 and 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport or equivalent, to comply with the forthcoming afPE Safe Practice Guidance for Schools."

Level 5 Primary School Physical Education Specialism & Level 6 Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership:

Developed by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) & Sports Leaders UK, these courses are considered an excellent use of Primary PE and Sport Premium funding. Both are nationally recognised qualifications that aim to upskill primary school teachers, higher level teaching assistants, TAs with experience of working within PE lessons as well as school based sports coaches. The intended outcome is to improve the overall delivery of the physical education curriculum within primary schools, and use PE as a key driver for whole school improvement.

The Level 5 seeks to raise delegates awareness of internationally backed research, evidencing how Physical Education is being used as a tool to drive English and Maths academic attainment. Furthermore it also seeks to support PE leaders in developing effective assessment approaches, without the need for the often expensive external subscription packages. Other themes covered include exploring how to effectively develop a clear provision for Physical Education that achieves Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ grading, whilst supporting the undertaking of a Physical Education audit, backed up with expert advice, guidance and CPD to make sustainable improvements across your school.

Plymouth and Cornwall Training are delighted to have teamed up with Hartpury University to support the embedding of the Level 5 Primary School Physical Education Specialism into their BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport degree. Hartpury University are rated among the best in the UK for teaching quality and have achieved the Teaching Excellence Framework Gold
